Johnny Bench

Cincinnati Reds began play in 1882 as a founding member of the American Association (AA). At that time, as they were known under Cincinnati Red. Since its formation, have been up and down, winning six major championships (one AA, five World Series) with an average of about 22 years between titles.

Would 20 years before the Reds capture another National League pennant and 21 years before another captured a World Series. In 1939, after winning the National League faced the Yankees in the World Series and were swept by them. It would be not long before they are returned, however, that the following year Cincinnati saw the replay of the National League champions and this time win the World Series against the Detroit Tigers in seven games. First was the third baseman Frank McCormick MVP in 1940.
In 1953, Cincinnati has adopted the nickname "Redlegs" to avoid any association with communism in the McCarthy era. They stayed until 1958, when the Redlegs were again the Reds.
After winning the World Series in 1940, the Reds were the worst drought long World Series in their history (35 years). They appreciated the regular season success on this occasion and National League pennants won a few, but surrendered to the American League teams in each World Series time.

In 1990, under new manager Lou Piniella, the unknown stunned Reds MLB National League leading from wire cable. They ended up sweeping the Oakland Athletics for the World Series to give the franchise its fifth World Series. They have not returned to the World Series since.
